From September 4 through 7, the first Blue Planet Film Fest ever will be held at The Ambrose hotel in Santa Monica, CA. Aimed at being a forum to get people aware of the environment and animal rights—as well as to get inspired and motivated to take action—it’s expected to brand environmental films as a genre and get them more into the public spotlight, much as the Sundance Film Festival did for independent films.
But showing eco-friendly films isn’t enough, as most environmentalists know. That’s why the festival is set to be as green as it can be. Even the tickets to the films are supposed to be green; they event is utilizing tree-free tickets from InTicketing. They are even donating a dollar per ticket for each the cause that the ticket’s movie is promoting and having a tree planted for every ticket sold.
Every day of the festival will have a theme as well. Animal Day is set for Friday, while Saturday is themed Water Day. Land Day will take place on Sunday, followed by Future Day on Monday.
The festival is not competitive; there will be no awards or recognition given for filming achievement. Instead, it’s all about the cause—the environment and animal welfare.
Interactive exhibits, workshops and other events will also be featured. These are to center around subjects such as sustainable living, global warming, ecology, wildlife, factory farming, animal welfare and other environmental issues. A raw food cooking show will be had, as well as a release of healed pelicans back into the wild.
According to the site, of the 5,300 festivals had around the world every year, less than sixty are dedicated to environmental issues.
Some films being featured include Wild Ocean, Liquid Assets, Our Daily Bread, and Flow. To see a complete list of films, click here, or view the festival’s complete schedule here. You can also sign up to help volunteer at the website.
Each film has its own cause, its own website and ways to take action. If you visit the film of your choice’s website you may find plenty of things to learn more about as well as ways to get involved.
All in all, it sounds like a much better film festival than this one was.
