Today, (3-8-10), Monday, 4:32 a.m, in a pre-dawn hour, local time, while most people slept in their beds, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6 struck eastern Turkey in Elazig province, killing scores people, injuring many more, destroying buildings. Strong destructive earthquakes in Haiti, Japan, Chile, Taiwan, Sumatra, Indonesia, and now Turkey? What's going on? Are earthquakes becoming as common as hurricanes?
Well, earthquakes are more common than the public thinks. The earth is constantly shaking, but the world is not falling apart Earthquakes are frequent were earthquakes occur. In Turkey, much of the country sits on top of the North Anatolian fault. Places built up on top of geological faults have earthquakes.
Some are wondering if California is due for an earthquake next. Today, (3/8/10), I checked the list, on the U.S. Geological Survey site, of recent earthquakes in California and Nevada. The list shows that in the last week, there have been Magnitude 3 and 4 earthquakes every other day. When will a big one come? Well, it could be soon.
