Well, at least the news media is starting to admit that the oil leak will hit the coast, rather than referring to it as a threat or a possibility. The thing is still leaking and I think we all have known all along that it will be hitting the coast, wreaking a serious amount of havoc, and will become an absolute national tragedy before it’s over. The problem with this one, similar to the financial crisis, is that no one is going to feel sorry for us because… we did it to ourselves. In the last two years the U.S. has watched as our financial market took a nose dive, our mortgage situation deteriorated, and our national unemployment shot up above 10%. Now our oil wells are leaking. Things are just not going well right now. Hopefully we hold on to that health care that Obama pushed through, because if things keep going this way we are going to need a lot of help.
U.S. officials are now saying it is "inevitable" that oil from the BP leak (isn’t that a little small of a word? Shouldn’t it be something more like gaping hole?) will hit the shoreline.
"There's enough oil out there that it is logical to think it will hit the shoreline. It's just a question of where and when. Mother Nature gets a vote in this," said U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen.
Good thing we have a genius at the helm, there. Mother Nature does not have a vote. Mother Nature is dealing with the disaster that we created. It’s not a vote.
Obama is now on his way down there. It must be a bitter bit of de ja vu for Air Force One, flying late to a disaster on the gulf just like the Hurricane Katrina saga.
The fact that we are relying on BP to cap their own well is theoretically ridiculous. They lose nothing but an investment by slowly responding. They can absorb that. The U.S., on the other hand, should be freaking out right now, doing everything possible to get down there are cap the thing. This is a major environmental disaster that is in progress. In a few weeks people will be talking about how much damage has happened to the Gulf’s coast, and it won’t be pretty. At that point, if the leak isn’t capped, there is going to be a major question mark built out of barbed wire flying at President Obama. He better do a lot more than fly down there and do a photo-op. If I were him I would be putting the same amount of energy into this as he put into health care. It’s time to call one of those meetings with the top leaders from each party, Mr. Obama.
While the administration is sitting around stressing that BP has the first responsibility, they are literally sitting there watching oil make its way through the barrier islands and on its way to the Delta. Tragic. And it should be a major implication on future offshore wind farms vs. drilling. This is not a difficult situation to learn from.
