Boycotting Target

Add Comment

Folks concerned about the Supreme Court's notorious 5-4 decision, which makes it possible for corporations, foreign owned and controlled ones too, to buy, to purchase, to acquire politicians and political parties, wholesale, by giving them bribes, I mean, campaign contributions, have jumped on the "Boycott Target" bandwagon, as a way to send a strong message to corporations, that if they want to play the partisan political game, they had better be ready for the consequence, which could be a consumer boycott of their product.

The Target Corporation made a substantial cash contribution, $150,000, to a political PAC, which supports a right-wing, anti-gay rights, political candidate for Governor of the Target Corporation's headquarters state, Minnesota.

MoveOn.org has joined in the boycott of the Target Corporation and has placed a 'Boycott Target' ad on the Internet. See the video.

No foolin' -- Dat oil ain't gone.

America has scientists for one reason: to get out there with their instruments, their common sense, and to follow the scientific method, which does not allow for politics to intrude, to document, to verify and to report their observations.

Well, scientists went out there, took their instruments with them, and their common sense, and returned, and yesterday, Thursday, these scientists reported the obvious: There ain't no such a thing as Mary Poppins magic, you can't sprinkle a little sugar and hope for the bitterness to go away.

BP, that bunch of truth challenged individuals, and the government, (and we know what politics does to truth speaking), told Mr and Mrs America, and all the little boys and girls that the BP nasty old oil spill was gone, and that we, Americans, have nothing to be concerned about, for the Gulf is safe, the sea food is safe, and everything is just peaches with ice cream.

Just four months into the making of this film, the funding for our first year of research and photography ran out. Part of that was my fault. I had been a bit too optimistic about how far we could stretch each Euro because I wanted so badly to get this project off the ground. The rest of the extraneous spending came from unexpected costs. Pricey hotel rooms, exorbitant taxi cab fares, unmarked tolls, bribes, taxes, equipment registration. Key lime pie. Even with my tiny crew the idea of taking on the entire former United States in one go seems, well, naive. Reluctantly, we packed up all the footage and equipment we hadn't already mailed back to England and boarded a plane for home.

Counteracting the Social Cost of the "Big Box"

Recently, I had to make a very important purchase - a new dining set for my small, urban, one bedroom apartment. There was a lot of thought to go into it but price was (as it always is) one of the biggest factors I had to consider. I wanted to stay as close as possible to $100 for the purchase of a sturdy table and four chairs - while at the same time also getting what I purchased delivered directly to my apartment. Impossible you say? Not so when you have Walmart.com on your side (for better or worse). I found exactly what I needed - a table and four chairs - delivered free to my apartment for $129.00 (plus tax).

A Quack's Long Goodbye

Dr. Laura Schlessinger, the right-wing talk radio shrink, under fire for repeatedly using a racial epithet, the N-word 11 times, to a caller on the air, announced  last night on CNN's “Larry King Live” that she has decided to end her show radio show at the end of the year. Why not sooner?

Sarah Palin Doesn’t Speak for All Mama Grizzlies

Add Comment

Recently, Sarah Palin used her common tactic of simple metaphors mixed with animals and third grade vocabulary words to highlight her presence and that of her soccer mom followers, whom she now refers to as “mama grizzlies.” She says that when their cubs are threatened, mama grizzlies attack—which, I think, is a valid point. Unlike many of the other strange things she’s tried to claim as fact, this is true; if you mess with the cub, you mess with the mama.

However, if translating said metaphor toward a more developed species—in this case, humans—it doesn’t work the same way. If a mama bear’s cubs become human boys and girls, bringing out the claws and teeth get trickier.

But What About The Dog Poop?

Add Comment

It's the question on every dog owner's mind.  "If I start bringing a reusable tote to the grocery store, what about the dog poop?"  It seems that every dog owner in the country uses plastic grocery bags for poop scooping.  Even the contemplation of seeking an alternative sends many dog owners into a tizzy.

One wonders, what happened to all the dog poop before plastic grocery bags became the norm?  As it happens, I am old enough to remember the answer: it just kinda sat there.  Gross, right?  Gross.

Cities may have had poop scooping laws on the books, but it wasn't until fairly recently (the last 15-20 years) that they started enforcing these rules.  That timing dovetails nicely with the rise in the use of plastic grocery bags, which crept into the market in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

When I get that Feelin' I need Spiritual Healin'

Add Comment

Have you ever got that "sinking" feeling - for no reason? You know, the feeling that there is something wrong with you or the world and it seems like you just can't seem to shake the thoughts? Perhaps you have been feeling ill lately and desperately need a cure to what ails you? It might be time for a spiritual talk with the leader you most admire or respect.

Studies have shown that there is some healing power attached to a talk with God. It is the power of faith and belief that give a boost to at least the sense of healing and these feelings can be both positive and negative - depending on the context of the conversation. A real spiritual talk can lift one up and boost both morale and the overall well-being of the recipient.

Amy Winehouse & Pee...Wee

Well, this is an oldy - but a goody... well grossy...

Im a huge fan of Amy Winehouse. In fact I aspire to be like her someday. honestly, who wouldn't want to be under the infuence, semi-conscious, out of control, and rich? I guess I do not want to be exactly like her though - I mean she does do and say some pretty bizarro things, but I like to think of them as British and "charming"... sometimes.
